There have been isolated instances of failure of rear lower control arm ball joint assemblies under racing conditions. Upon examination it has been determined that the failures were the result of improperly assembled/tightened ball joints and retaining nuts.
Porsche Motorsport suggests the following procedure for assembly:
1. Careful visual inspection of ball joint tapered surface for signs of wear. Surface must be smooth and free of signs of movement within the wheel carrier.
2. Careful visual inspection of tapered ball joint socket in wheel carrier.
3. Ball joints and wheel carriers showing signs of wear must be replaced.
4. Mating surfaces in the wheel carrier and on the ball joint taper must be grease free before assembly.
5. Assemble ball joint to control arm and torque nut to 81 Nm (60 ft.lb.) while holding ball joint stud with T-40 Torx tool.
